Relatively clean downtown area. Staff at local business I visited or spoke with on the phone were all kind and patient with my lack of local knowledge.

Unfortunately, entertainment options beyond cinema are sparse at best, and dining out options are primarily mediocre. Not to sound snooty, when Panda Express gets the most reviews and lands at a 4.9 out of 5.. well you get the idea. That said, the few local highlights are actually great.

Check out the El Capitan Hotel, Rainbird and Mainzer. These are new or recently refreshed and offer excellent service and dining options.

Had a great Travel with Amtrak from SF to Merced and back. The Station officer was very committed and courteous and helped me a lot to rebook my ticket after i missed my train. Its a small station, but great for American standards.

It's clean and so are the bathrooms. It's very well lit and the attendant is very nice & helpful. I felt safe as I was waiting for my train to arrive.

I was kicked off the train here because an amtrack employee name zack harrassed me and my dog. We were very nervous and upset.

He spoke over us, discriminated, yelled, argued and never offered a solution. The only thing he ever wanted was for me to be taken off the train. we didn’t disturb anyone. My dogs are fully documented and have federal service travel passes. Now we are stranded far from home and no way to return or continue our trip.

So far, police and corporate have not been able to offer any reaolution.

Hotter than f▪︎ck! Train station doesn't have a lot of shade. But best stop on the entire San Joaquins route because its a crew change stop so its 5 times as long as the other stops which means its only stop where you can get off train & smoke!

Station is very clean and offers several outlets to charge your phone. Restrooms and vending machines that accept credit cards are convenient. Mostly a safe Amtrak station, but occasional homeless and questionable people begging for money. Uber and Lyft are extremely rare in Merced, so be sure to have a ride or call a local taxi.
