"Settle, North Yorkshire: Where Time Stands
Still (and So Do the Residents)

If you're looking for an authentic taste of the 1950s, look no further than the charming town of Settle, North Yorkshire. This quaint little village seems to have been frozen in time, right down to the cobblestone streets and sleepy locals who move with all the urgency of a tortoise crossing the road.

The main attraction in Settle appears to be the Market Place, which hosts a market every Wednesday and Saturday. Or at least, that's what it says on the sign - to be honest, I didn't actually see any evidence of an active market when I visited. Just a bunch of old codgers slowly shuffling around, pausing occasionally to glare at any young whippersnappers who dare breach the sanctity of their domain.

Accommodations are decidedly rustic, with the local B&Bs looking like they haven't been updated since the reign of Queen Victoria.
Expect creaky bed frames, antimacassars on every surface, and a full English breakfast that will leave your arteries weeping.
The highlight (or lowlight, depending on your perspective) has to be the Settle-Carlisle railway, a winding, scenic route that takes approximately two hours to travel a distance that Google Maps says should take 45 minutes by car. I'm not sure if the train is powered by steam or the collective life force of the passengers, but it certainly seems to chug along at a glacial pace.
All in all, a visit to Settle is like taking a step back in time - or perhaps a stumble, given the uneven pavements. If you're looking to experience the England of your grandparents' youth, with all the charming quirks and soul-crushing boredom that entails, then this is the place for you. Just don't expect to be back in time for tea."

Lovely station, great both for the town & to head off up the Settle to Carlisle railway route or walks in the dales. Lots of information provided by the Friends of the line, waiting rooms have heaters, station kept in good order. Nice shop too.

Peaceful and historical far from city rat race.
The station was full of calmness, beautiful which brought most memories of my hometown railway station in a small town in Taiping, Malaysia some 14,000 km away from Settle, UK.
The time seem to stop allowing us to experience the wonderful, graceful where no one's seem to be rushing around as most of the railway 's patrons were senior citizen and we were the only ones slightly younger to them.
Most wonderful and memorable journey in UK.
A very recommended stop.

Settle Railway Station is a magical place. The views from the platforms are fantastic, the staff are brilliant, and the buildings are well taken care of and make you feel like you have stepped back in time. Andy at the ticket office was so helpful, could not have sorted out my travelling details without his advice. And have sought advice many other times, always met with cheerful help from the ticket counter staff. PLEASE KEEP THE TICKET OFFICES OPEN. Many people who require assistance will not be able to get the specific help they need at an automated infopoint (saying this as a millennial who has used dozens of phone ticket apps AND buys tickets at ticket counters—we NEED face to face ticket staff and often online systems or station screens completely fail). Thanks!

Here on holiday, we've been before. Settle is a lovely little place, with plenty of outstanding walks nearby. The railway station is looked after by volunteers. Plenty of eateries to suit everybody's palette. The weather has been perfect while we've been here, so no complaints.
